It is in the imperfections
SHEI Photo Editor, Sunny, weighs in on our recent lomography post:
Before I show you the pics, I want to add a few things from a photographer’s perspective. Lomography is actually not cheap, those little camera cost $60+ while a good second hand DSLR (Film) only cost around $100. But with Lomo what you pay for is a distinct ”low tech” approach. Gone are the complex metering, tinkering and picture quality. Instead, you’ve got a leaky camera with a crappy plastic lens that generates a one of a kind image.
Yet those broken images bring fourth a powerful sense of nostalgia. The discolored, out of focus pictures give a dream-like haze in the pictures. Your focus is no longer about the technical aspect of creating the picture but the essence of the picture itself.Â
But be warned! It is easy to fall into the hipster valley where you are chasing the random effects of Lomo, and shooting lomo cause it is “in”. You should think and understand the imperfection that is Lomo and use it as a tool to create art, not further the Hipster Agenda.
Here are some of my Lomo and from Scarlette Sheung, a photographer from Hong Kong
