Let’s do brunch

A perfect brunch

A perfect brunch

Summer’s lazy days present a perfect opportunity to indulge in brunch and Ann Arbor is an ideal location for brunch-ing.

Brunch isn’t just a playful portmanteau of the words “breakfast” and “lunch.” It’s a term that contains an important constraint to keep in mind, i.e. you cannot eat brunch if you’ve already had breakfast.  Brunch does not care if you have a plate of eggs, bacon and toast in front of you at 1 p.m. If you had your usual bowl of granola earlier in the day, forget it: you’re eating lunch, buddy. Thankfully, there are pleanty of choices in our fair city.

A bar might not be the first thing on people’s minds when they crave brunch, but one of Ann Arbor’s best brunch menus is found at a local watering hole. The Aut Bar, located in the Kerrytown district, serves a Mexican-tinged brunch on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Its menu offers more traditional brunch items as well for stomachs unwilling to venture south of the border.

Café Zola is my personal favorite brunch spot. Their savory crêpes made with buckwheat flour are mindblowing. If you’re having a hard time choosing a crêpe, I highly recommend the ratatouille. Portions are quite filling, but if you’re still feeling peckish, try one of the sweet crêpes. Brunch at Café Zola is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An Ann Arbor classic, Afternoon Delight is a dedicated breakfast and lunch eatery – in fact, they close at 3 p.m. There are plenty of options for health-nuts and vegetarians, and the prices are quite reasonable considering its proximity to Main Street.

This place isn’t the most lavish of all eateries (in fact, its quite the opposite), but Fleetwood Diner is a great place to channel your inner hippie and grab brunch on a summer morning. Try the Hippie Hash!
