Love for Avalove

25 August 2009 No Comment

SHEI wants to introduce Ava Hu, a poet and clothing designer in New York City. Her work is typically found at streetfairs and she updates her locations on her website.  No matter where she’s found, her booth is always crowded.  People are clearly infatuated with Hu’s unique “Avalove” designs.

The lupin flowers are Ava Hu's favorite of her designs. Which one do you love?

The lupin flowers are Ava Hu's favorite of her designs. Which one do you (Ava) love?

For the Brooklyn-native who calls herself a faded cynic, faux-vintage shirts are out.  Instead, Hu prefers unpretentious, sincere pieces.  The poet-turned-designer is known for her peacock plumes, lupin flowers, and hummingbird prints. Hu says, “the nature-inspired wrap dresses bridge the gap between flower-child and rock star. The clothes are smart and funky with a kind of pretty optimism that is increasingly rare. It’s like a Janis Joplin without the heroin!”

Like any other independent designer living in a city full of creative people, Hu struggles to advertise her AvaLove products.  But her online store has a range of new hip designs often sprinkled with her passionate poetry that is readily available to anyone with the resources to read this post.

Because Ava prints all of her designs by hand, they tend to be a bit expensive, averaging at $50 per dress. However, you can be assured that nobody will have the same design, as she makes few of the same print.  Furthermore, Hu professes a love of earth-friendliness and her items are produced in a sweatshop-free environment that is most assuradly a “positive work environment”.

It’s beautiful, it’s sexy, it’s one of a kind! Check out Avalove’s line for something different this fall.
