Boyfriend Jeans

3 June 2009 2 Comments

With the economy the way it is, coughing up the funds to accommodate today’s hottest premium denim is perhaps not as feasible as it was before. Lucky for you, fashionistas, this spring is all about stealing…from your boyfriend’s closet. Coined the “boyfriend jean,” this particular pant is worn low on the waist, fits loose in the leg, and is cuffed at the hem.

First spotted on Katie Holmes last summer in New York City, the boyfriend jean has been donned by celebs such as Rachael Bilson, Sienna Miller, Reese Witherspoon and Victoria Beckham. And for those of us who – ahem – don’t have a man’s wardrobe available for our fashion needs, the trend has made its way to countless designers’ 2009 spring collections, including Seven for All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, True Religion, Joe’s Jeans, J Brand and Current/Elliott, all of which feature their own fresh takes on the trend, from a funky distress to patchwork on the back pockets.

Not so willing to shell out the cash for designer prices? Vintage shop jeans or doctored jeans from your own closet can also do the trick, so long as the jean has a straight-leg or boot cut fit. Whatever the label, boyfriend jeans are paired best with flats and a fitted tee or tank to avoid looking sloppy, though they can also be dressed up with pumps. While some view this look as comfortable and effortlessly stylish, others see the boyfriend jean as one trend not worth following. So, readers, what do you think? Love them or hate them?

And I’m really tired of getting all my too-long pants hemmed … looking forward to this trendy alternative!
