Think this is neat? Think again!

Fish, the poor soles*, are usually confined to a boring glass bowl in the dorm rooms of college freshmen as a substitute for their dearly missed family pet.  But not all aquariums suffer from a case of the mundane.

The Fish ‘n Flush aquarium, for example, is unlike anything you’d see in a doctor’s office. Targeted towards suburban families with kids, the Fish ‘n Flush is a two-piece toilet tank that doubles as an aquarium. According to the website, one of the reasons why you should purchase this item is its potential to “entertain” and “excite.” Personally I find this somewhat disturbing, but if entertainment and excitement are two things you look for while shopping for a new toilet tank, Fish ’n Flush might be the perfect solution.

For those with slightly classier tastes, Aquarium Source produces custom-made aquariums that have been used in luxury hotels and even showcased in the homes of celebrities. Their online ordering system makes designing a new aquarium quite simple: you choose from nine basic shapes, then pick a size, choose a lighting system, and decide on cabinetry. My bullet-shaped aquarium configuration with ebony cabinetry ended up costing over $4500. Needless to say, I did not click “Add to Cart.”

While Aquarium Source focuses on bringing luxury fish tanks to the average upper-middle-class homeowner, Living Color Aquariums specializes in designing aquariums for commercial spaces. Their website features several examples of their work – my favorites were The Seafood Bar at the Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach (they literally integrated an aquarium into the bar) and Dr. Larry Kawa’s decked out* orthodontist office in Boca Raton.

If this was my dentist's office, I'd be there ALL the time.
