Purple Reign

- Prince, Purple Rain–Purple Reign? Terrible pun, I know.
For men, the color purple has been passed over for ages in favor of blues, blacks, and greens and other boring neutral shades. But perhaps the royal hue has regained some of its reverence in menswear as of late.Â
Quite obviously, the artist we’re now allowed to call Prince (right?) has been a stalwart supporter of the grapes; indeed, his preponderance for what people might think of as “fruity†colors gives his style a sleek otherworldliness. Cobra Starship frontman Gabe Saporta is another musician campaigning for purple, and his trademark American Apparel sweatshirt takes center stage on the band’s 2nd album cover, ¡Viva la Cobra!, and in various iPod Nano commercials (now with video!).
Purple isn’t just limited to music; for his 2008 Autumn/Winter collection for House of Holland, the eponymous Henry sent down model after model in plum tartan. If a full suit is too sartorially daunting, try on this fitted military shirt from Express—the comfortable cotton, funky checks and martial style will negate any “femme-y†insinuations from the color—or Urban Outfitters’ U-neck tee for a casual, burned-out and laid-back statement of cool. For the fashion forward—and fearless—pick purple pants (these are on sale!) from the effervescent, ever-classy Brit import Topman.
Accessories? Grab a pair of aviators and buy a tie or two.
