This is the sound of…ice.

8 December 2009 No Comment

What do they play at the Ice Hotel? Ice Records.

No, I’m not talking about the notorious pop-duo Milly Vanilly. (get it? ice ice baby…)  I’m talking about the amazing sound of these Ice Records from Katie Paterson which are carefully crafted from frozen water to create hauntingly beautiful sounds.

Traditionally, an etched plate is pressed into vinyle to make the semi-durable turn-table staples.  Paterson used ice instead of vinyle.  It supposidly took about 2 hours for them to melt.

You can listen to the sound on youtube and check out more of her projects at her website.  Where did she get her inspiration? There’s a pretty good article on Jailbreak and another on Gizmodo.
