Fashion Inspiration?

Introducing: Rhiannon. You may already recognize her name – Rhiannon’s been writing for us since the summer.  She has a wide variety of interests from sustainability and design to music and the best of Ann Arbor.  Keep reading for her take on “This season’s new color.”

Unfortunately for budding trendsetters there’s no specific formula to figure out the color for any particular season. . . until now!

Through extensive research, I have discovered that a positive correlation exists between the bizarreness of a color’s name and that color’s hip factor. The best part is that there’s no math involved. Simply find the oddest color name and you’ll have the season’s new black, no questions asked.

Because no scientific endeavor would be complete without hard evidence, check out this sampling of discoveries from my research:

Caput Mortuum – It  sounds like something everybody’s favorite wizard would say, but really it’s a purplish-brown pigment popular with oil painters. 

Atomic Tangerine – No, this isn’t the name of your uncle’s now-defunct high school punk band, it’s a pinkish-orange hue created by Crayola.

Xanadu – Need  I say more? This color might resemble a drab gray, but its name is so badass that nobody will care.

Harlequin – Eccentric clown? Trashy romance novel? A baby with a severe case of dry skin? Nope, it’s a bright shade of spring green.

Razzmatazz – I swear my jazz instructor used to tell me I needed a little more of this back in the 7^th grade. According to Wikipedia, this crimson-rose Crayola invention was named by a 5 year old. I’m not surprised.

And, last but not least:

Papaya Whip – Anything that sounds like a dessert topping HAS to be hip (Not to mention, “whip” rhymes with “hip”. Just saying.). You can even buy a tie in this light shade of peach. Dessert + Ties = Best Color Name Ever.
