A Fashionable Time at The DIA
Today I took a day trip or “staycation” if you will to the DIA with my wonderful mom. We went to see the Avedon Fashion Photography Exhibit which showcased stylish photos taken by Richard Avedon from 1944-2000. We’ve mentioned this exhibit in a previous post, but keep reading for a full review!Â
Avedon is known for having taken stunning pictures of supermodels and stars who are usually wearing exquisite evening gowns. These photos were captured against blank backgrounds, nature, famous sights like the Eiffel Tour, or within busy scenes in cafes or nightclubs. I was happy to see that many of the photos were taken in Paris, my personal favorite fashion city! The majority of the photos were in black-and-white; only the modern photos contained color.
My eye was instantly drawn to the beauty queens wearing the lavish fashion designs in each snapshot. The remaining elements were usually a bit blurry and not as vivid, making the fashion model the main focus. As I walked through the exhibit, I noticed that a lot of the poses imitated those of a ballerina, which I later read was done on purpose to showcase a specific model’s gracefulness and background in dance.
A really cool part of this museum exhibit was the cell phone tour. All you had to do was dial a number and type in the number indicated on a photo and you would be given some interesting facts on the specific scene in front of your eyes. It was a nice “tech friendly†way to travel through the museum. My mom and I noticed that no matter what era the pictures were from, the styles were timeless.

A Mother/Daughter Fashion Outing
I would love to put on a designer gown, some dazzling diamonds, a pair of gorgeous heels and be the girl in the frame sashaying my way through the streets of Paris being photographed by the one and only, Richard Avedon.
The exhibit is scheduled until January 17th so there’s still time to see his work for yourself. You can find more details at the DIA website.Â

One of my favorites!

I went to this exhibit the other day and it was absolutely fabulous! One of my favorite aspects of Avedon’s photography is how he manages to capture subtle emotions and whimsy while still beautifully portraying the designer’s clothing.
The exhibit was great. If anyone want to talk photo, come hang out with the photo department, we will be having more meetings (every two week?), where members will check out books from photo masters and talk about photography.
If you love fashion and photography you must see the exhibit. I saw it and loved it. I didn’t know anything about Avedon before I saw the show. What a talented artist!!!
