Away with Me! and Getting There

7 February 2010 No Comment

It’s been one week since I left the States for fair Switzerland.  I’ve enjoyed most of it, and I’m looking forward to giving more details about life here, from the fine arts to pop culture and all the great stuff in between.  But before I can begin that, I think it would be a shame to forget the gateway of travel – the airpot. Here’s an homage to those meccas of returns and departures.

Just a nice photo of George Clooney from Up in the Air...mrow.

For the most part, air-travel seems to get kind of a bad rap.  Yes, there is usually waiting. And if not waiting, then running.  Yet they’re incredibly important to the vitality of a region economically and can also provide some great inspiration for artists of many manifestations, from literature & film to art & design.

There’s been a lot of buzz in the Ann Arbor area about the runway expansion at the Ann Arbor Municipal Airport but also about the plans for a Detroit Region Aerotropolis which would expand the Detroit Metro Airport.

But let’s bring this back into the realm of SHEI…check out this post from Swiss-Miss.com about the Kulula Airplane rebranding project.  They’ve taken a basically boring and sometimes frightening transport and turned it into something downright eye-catching.

And while it’s pretty easy to cite Up In the Air with George Clooney as one popular “airport film”, let’s not forget the captivating movie starring Tom Hanks, The Terminal.  And who hasn’t hoped that the conclusion of Garden State, complete with heart-wreching jog through Newark (I think), would maybe one day happen to them?

Anyway, airports are lots of fun.  There’s a lot more I could say about the sweeping architecture and psychological effects BUT – I’ll leave you to reflect.
