Away with me! to the Swiss Alps

5 March 2010 No Comment

For most of us, “Switzerland” conjures up images of ski chalets that scenically dot the snow-laden Swiss Alps.  And frankly, that’s exactly what it looks like. So how can you ski in the magical Confoederatio Helvetica? Keep reading…

First, select destination.  There are a variety of slopes from which to choose based on your experience level and preferred location.  Also think about what else you’re looking for in this weekend and don’t forget to research various packages that include hotel rooms, museum tickets, and transportation.

Pretty much all of these destinations can be reached via Swiss Rail and it’s fairly simple to leave in the morning and return in the evening without scrambling to catch a train.  There will always be another along soon.

No worries if you didn’t bring your equipment. In fact, it may be more convenient to get it there.  You can choose the most convenient option for you, include renting your equipment for a day (for a mere $50), a weekend, or for the season.  With some additional planning, you could even pick out your equipment ahead of a time and have it waiting for you when you step off the train at your skiing destination.

Begin the day well-rested and ready to pace yourself.  Once you’re on the slopes, you have to go all the way through to make it back. But don’t worry about packing a full lunch – you will undoubtedly find a busy ski restaurant high the alps serving hot spiced wine and giant pots of fondue.

Even the most seasoned skier may be in need of some relaxation the next day.  My advice? Try the thermal springs.  For about $20, you can have access to the heated baths of a spa of your choosing for 3 hours. The water is toasty even outside and surrounded by snow capped mountains.  Many of these spas also have other options such as Nordic Saunas and Turkish Baths, all at your disposal. It’s the perfect way to end a weekend of skiing, just search for the one nearest to you.

If you stuck in Ann Arbor for Spring break, and looking for something to do, you could try a ski weekend of your own. Try nearby Mt. Brighton for downhill skiing or Dexter-Huron Metropark if you prefer going cross-country.  And for that recovery day?  Ann Arbor’s RelaxStation is close to home and has reasonable prices.

All the Best,
