Concert Review: Big Boi

7 October 2010 No Comment

Despite my negative response to the performance, I still encourage everyone to listen to this album

I was extremely excited for this Big Boi concert. Big Boi’s latest album, “Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty,” is a magnificent one, containing many great songs, all the way from its single, “Shutterbug,” to its last song, “The Back-Up Plan.” So I figured this would be a great concert, as Big Boi could perform many songs off this CD, as well as many classics from his Outkast days.

In that way, the concert turned out to be what I expected, with him performing a variety of different songs from “The Way You Move” to “Daddy Fat Sax.” And it was a good performance overall, there were just strange disturbances that made the entire show seem a little amateur. For example the entire opening act seemed incredibly staged and fake. Then as soon as the opener ended, someone came out and announced that Big Boi wouldn’t be coming out because he wasn’t paid by the frat. Ultimately he did come out and perform, but that strange break really interrupted the flow of the whole show. After that, I felt it took a while for the atmosphere to build up to its maximum level, and as soon as it felt like the show was really getting going, it simply ended there. Apparently, Indiana has a law that prohibits music from being played past 10:00 PM, so as soon as the clock reached 10, Big Boi just left the stage without a word and everyone left. There was no farewell, no encore, no nothing. The show was just over, leaving me standing there, absolutely confused, trying to figure out what was going on.

For those reasons, it was really easy to see that this was simply a performance. Also Big Boi looked like a complete asshole for bashing the frat for not paying him, and walking off immediately after his show was done. Don’t get me wrong, the music was awesome, but all that stuff took away from the feel of the show, and it was hard to get over that.

So overall, I rate the show pretty average, a 5/10, if you will. I still love Big Boi’s music, and his latest album is still epic, but I think I lost some respect for him that night. Maybe I was just expecting something different, but I don’t think that’s it. If the show didn’t have such an amateur feel to it, I’d be giving it a much better review.
