Kombucha Krazy

28 February 2010 No Comment

There’s a new craze in Los Angeles. And, no, it doesn’t involve the Kardashian’s. Kombucha (pronounced: kom-boo-cha) is an organic, fermented tea that does it all. George Thomas Dave, who dropped out of Beverly Hills High School to start his own beverage business, created a combination that he claims cured his mother’s breast cancer. Kombucha is a fermented mix of black tea and sugar. Fruit juices are added into the mix a month after fermentation. Kombucha, an ancient remedy from Asia, is associated with several health benefits. In addition to (supposedly) curing George Thomas Dave’s mother’s breast cancer, it has also been linked to relieving congestion, increasing sex drive, helping asthma, and relieving stress. It’s also been known to thicken hair and help with wrinkles.

Honest Tea, which is partially owned by Coca Cola, released Honest Kombucha a few months back. Since its release, Kombucha has become a total hit. Celebrities in Los Angeles have been spotted walking around Rodeo Drive with a bottle in hand.Whether or not it actually works is another story; there’s a good possibility Kombucha is just a fad (remember Kabbalah?). But, a lot of people swear by it. When asked why he drinks it, a friend of mine from Los Angeles said, “Honestly, it’s really good and it’s surprisingly the best hangover cure out there.” Definitely something to keep in mind!

If you’re interested, check out Kombucha at Whole Foods or Espresso Royale. The flavors range from peach mango to lemon ginger to berry hibiscus. It’s $5 a bottle, which is more than your typical bottle of tea. But, let’s be honest- thicker hair, increased sex drive, no wrinkles- I’d say that’s worth it.
