Lab: The New Cafe on the Block

13 April 2010 One Comment

One might wonder why Ann Arbor needs a new coffee shop considering the ubiquity of Espresso Royale, Starbucks and university-owned cafes. However, the freshly opened Lab on East Liberty St. finds its niche with its hand-dripped Intellegentsia coffees and specialty teas–not to mention trendy, tart froyo (frozen yogurt for you newbies). The sparse interior decor plays off the cafe’s name through unfinished wood, steel and glass beakers, while the back wall screens animations created by university students. The coffee’s good, the teas are good, I love the honeydew froyo, and they also make a mean latte. Prices are a pretty steep and the small coffee is really small, but nothing we haven’t seen before from other pour-over coffee shops. I’d say Lab is bound to become a favorite of the artsy, hipster Ann Arbor crowd. All in all, it’s an experimental success.
