SHEI Vert: Planet-Friendly Rides

17 March 2010 No Comment

Taking public transport and cycling are no-brainer methods of reducing your carbon emissions, but sometimes there’s no way to get around without a car. Thankfully there are plenty of low-fuel options out there that not only emit less noxious fumes but save money too – and if you don’t mind spending green, car companies have your back as well.

Small Cars

Driving a small car is the easiest way to cut down on fuel consumption, and practically every car company has a vehicle in this category. Check out the following three for example:

Toyota Yaris (3-Door Hatchback)

Hybrid Cars

Hybrid cars don’t look or handle that much differently from conventional cars, but their use of a battery as a temporary energy storage device increases the efficiency of the engine and reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The hybrid market is growing quickly to include even luxury vehicle manufacturers.

Toyota Prius

Carbon emissions: 127

MPG: 48/51

Fuel Cost (cents per mile): 5.2

Small cars and hybrid engines aren’t the only way to go about reducing your carbon footprint, though they are the most convenient and widely-available. But bioethanol is quickly becoming popular with automotive companies like Ford and GM who both have a range of “flex-fuel” vehicles that can run on regular gasoline and E85, a form of bioethanol that contains only 15% gasoline. Even sportscar enthusiasts can jump on the flex-fuel train with the Koenigsegg CCXR – if they’re willing to drop $1.2 million, that is.
