Sonia Rykiel for H&M: Playful or Preschool?

16 February 2010 No Comment

Whenever these high-profile designers do collections for H&M, I can only curse the fact that I don’t live in the vicinity of an H&M store important enough to get a shipment. However, I’m still not sure how I feel about Sonia Rykiel’s collection of knitwear and accessories that hits stores February 20th.

The line from the acclaimed “Queen of Knits” is colorful and playful, full of bright stripes and canary yellow. Rykiel also features motifs like bows, crowns and scattered rhinestones. There are some pieces I would totally rock, like an over-sized, striped knit jumper and a pair of black patent thick platform shoes. Even the somewhat clown-like jumpsuit has potential.

But some of the clothing seriously makes me think of my kindergarten years, when I would without hesitation gravitate towards rhinestone-studded, baby pink jumpers… and rhinestone berets, and rhinestone-studded ruffle shirts, and rhinestone-studded bangles. You get the point. Thus, I’m a little relieved that this collection won’t be showing up at Ann Arbor’s nearest mall, since just the name Sonia Rykiel might make me compulsively purchase rhinestone covered leggings. Take a look at the full lookbook here.
