The Case for Kanye

31 January 2010 2 Comments

Popular men’s fashion mag GQ is running an interesting feature on its website- a top-25 list of today’s most stylish men.  I’m intrigued.I propose an addition.  That someone?  Kanye West.  His head’s huge, yes, but as Kanye’s trips to the SHEI blog are limited, I’ll assume, then I won’t feel too guilty further stroking his ego.

Asides aside, though, Kanye is the individual I was most disappointed to not see featured on GQ’s list.  Though his ‘Pastelle’ line never came to fruition, Kanye’s still throttling an assault on the fashion world.  Throwback jerseys, baggy jeans, and brilliantly awful jewelry used to be protocol in the hip-hop/rap universe, but since around the release of 808′s and Heartbreaks, Kanye’s helped shore a more mature yet edgy vibe to the industry– think cardigans, skinny denim, and understated accessories.

Dude may act like a seven year, but dresses like a veteran (we’ll hold our tongue about his girl Amber Rose, but here’s this).  I look forward to seeing what Kanye can continue to bring to runways and red carpets (unless they lead to the VMAs….too stale?).   Below’s a selection of some of ‘Ye’s better-rocked looks…sometimes, actions photos speak louder than words.

Yeezy flanked by his posse, which includes an equestrian of some sort

The above pic displays Kanye’s strong command of accessories– the leather gloves really let the shoes and suitcase pop.  The undersized blazer would look dwarfed by the button-up, but the plaid coat pulls the look together.

Still waiting on what’s hanging around his neck

The uniformity of color (or lack thereof)  could look tacky, but I think Kanye has the right attitude to pull it off.  Throwing on a nice outfit doesn’t necessary quantify style– the confidence needs to be there as well.  See your average Michigan student in the same getup, and expect it to probably flop.

Be glad he didn't try the outfit on the right

It’s one thing to pull off a jean jacket– it’s another to pair it with a bow tie.  Very nice.

What do you think?
