Travel Channel’s Chowdown Countdown

2 February 2010 One Comment

The Travel Channel has been running a series called the 101 Tastiest Places to Chowdown, and they debuted their final 20-1 list last Sunday night. Unfortunately, the show aired at the untimely hour of 10pm, when I was using every ounce of self control to not gorge myself on a late night snack. However, after an hour of tantalizing footage of artery-clogging steaks and hamburgers, I succumbed to my rumbling stomach and ran to the refrigerator.

The Travel Channel awarded the prestigious number 1 spot to Louis’ Lunch in New Haven, Connecticut–the restaurant credited by the Library of Congress to be the home of the first hamburger. But the places that got my attention were the ones located right here in Michigan. Five noteworthy cholesterol-raising restaurants made it onto the list, including two competing Coney Islands in Detroit.

Though they're famous for their brisket enchilada, the ribs at Slow's look far from shabby.

I especially want to try Slow’s Bar-B-Q in Detroit, ranked number 40. They’re famous for their brisket enchiladas. The smoked meat looked juicy and mouth-watering on television, so I can’t wait to try it the next time I’m in Motor City. Tony’s 1-67 in Birchrun, MI (home to Birchrun Outlet Mall to all you hungry shoppers) had the highest ranking BLT on the list, coming in at number 29. On their menu, they feature a BLT with a full pound of bacon. Thank  you Michigan for making this world a tastier, more bacon-filled place to live in!

I think it’s Tony’s I-75. I’ve been once, and even though it was years ago I still feel greasy from the experience.
