Sunday Staples: Chucks

I’ll neither confirm nor deny that a kitschy fetish for alliteration dictated the aim – and title – of this feature; hopefully a recurring feature, too, unless public disgust dictates that the plug be pulled- but, as I intend to simply highlight the staples of a men’s closet (feathery boas, jumbo paisley power ties, etc.), I don’t forecast that end.

He Shoots, He Scores: David Merritt Transitions from Basketball Captain to Fashion Entrepreneur

David Merritt, former captain of the University of Michigan basketball team, braved the cold weather and sat down with me at Espresso Royale to discuss his clothing line, IMU, which aims to spread happiness and showing compassion towards others. Merritt was proved collected and compassionate, and provided us with a better understanding of his ever-growing company. His second collection launches on Saturday, so make sure to check it out on the website.

Before The Sartorialist…

Remember previously-blogged about street photographer Vivian Maier? I recently had the opportunity to interview John Maloof, who purchased Maier's negatives and was the first to discover her talent, John Maloof. Read on!

SHEI Vert: Winterize-My-Bike

In places like Michigan, where winter brings frigid temperatures and icy roads, most cyclists abandon their trusty metal steeds as soon as the temperature starts to drop. For those who depend on bikes for an extra fifteen minutes of sleep before waking up for work or class, it’s not a happy time. But cold weather doesn’t require a break from cycling. With a few adjustments to your wardrobe and bike, you can keep riding from first snow to April showers (maybe followed by April snow).

Bilal’s Stand: An Interview with the “Real” Bilal

Concluding our series on Bilal's Stand is an interview with the "real" Bilal, director and screenwriter Sultan Sharrief.

Shag carpet is one of the most unfortunate things to come out of the 1970s, along with the oil crisis and Margaret Thatcher. Unlike Margaret Thatcher, however, both oil crises and shag carpet have made a comeback. And thanks to the authors of “Carbon Free Home,” one of those resurgences could actually make the world a better place.
