ArtoftheTrench.com – Hell NO!

This coat just reeks of "Tool"

This coat just reeks of "Tool"

Word has reached my ears that Burberry has launched a social networking site, based on its trench coats. Upon hearing this, I was filled with so much anger and rage that I could barely form any words besides “That’s awful….” However, after a couple moments of delicate thought, I could think I can help explain why this website might just be the most idiotic creation in recent human history.

The basic premise behind this site is that any member can post pictures of themselves wearing said Burberry trench coats. From there, other members can “like” whatever pics they enjoy and comment on them as well. I’ve also heard that, apparently, some think that this could be the “new Facebook.” Here are some questions I’d like to ask you.

1. Is this really what we do with our time?

So, to repeat myself, the basic premise of this site is to look at pictures of trench coats and comment on them. How could anyone possibly spend more than 5 minutes doing this? I mean, they are trench coats. Perhaps if they added a little variety, and allowed scarves as well, I could understand your attention being captured for 10 minutes. But how could you spend any significant amount of time here?

I remember a time when little kids were building model airplanes and cars for fun, and taking them for a spin around the back yard. Those good ol’ fashion activities taught kids real values that would help them someday. Now our culture is trying to tell us that our time should be spent commenting on trench coats. Have we really fallen that far? Is this now what we do with our time? I really hope that the majority of people in the Western Culture agree with me on this, but its possible that I have too much faith in the world population.

2. Could the fashion world get any more pretentious?

So fashion companies are now making “social networking sites” just for the purpose of talking about their products? I mean, just the very idea reeks of snobbery. I see this website as the “Let’s talk about how great Burberry is” website, which is, of course, created by Burberry. It’s almost like the Burberry executives needed an ego boost, and wanted to fish for complements, so they created a website where people could tell them how awesome they were. Then they arrogantly decided that this trash would replace Facebook, called it a day, and mocked poor people before heading home.

3. What the hell am I listening to right now?

The music that decides to play itself in the background of the website, while good initially, is just two similar songs on repeat. So, after 10 minutes on the site, they begin to gnaw at your ears and tear at your soul. As a result, I can’t possibly imagine staying on this place voluntarily for more than 15 minutes.

In addition, they thought it would a cool effect to play street noises in the background the entire time. To be honest, it is kinda cool for the first 2 minutes, but before too long it’s repetitiveness makes you wanna throw yourself through the nearest window.

Sorry if this sounded a little… forceful… But I really thing this sort of website is both useless and arrogant, and deserves no place in pop culture. I condemn Burberry for being pretentious enough for trying to promote themselves in this way and beg everyone to avoid this website like the plague if they cherish their own sanity.
