Holiday Shopping with SHEI: BIG Sale this week on Main Street

Though many of us are waiting until Black Friday or better yet, the final weeks immediately preceeding the Holidays, I think I’d like to try to get started early this year.  Furthermore, I’ve decided to do the great majority if not all of my shopping in Ann Arbor.  Why?  Because we’ve got an award-winning Main Street surrounded by even more fantastic small businesses that deserve our support and because they’ve promised some great deals this season.

There are a lot of great organizations in Ann Arbor and the greater Washtenaw County devouted to enriching the business community in the area.  From the Main Street Area Association to Think Local First of Washtenaw County, these groups are encouraging the general economic healthyness of our region through proactive community-building strategies.

Part of what makes Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus such a great place to be year round is its vibrancy of the local business owners from Main Street to South University Street.  I don’t have to remind you the shock that many felt when returning for the Fall Semester to find many supposed staples of college life – like Shaman Drum – gone.

This week let’s focus on Main Street – named by the American Planning Association as one of the Greatest Main Streets in America. From November 13th to November 19th, the Main Street Area Association is having some great deals as part of their “BIG Sale” event.  This includes “20% off something or everything or a free gift with your purchase.” Check out their website for a full list of participants which includes some of the big names of that district, from restaurants to retailers.  And did I mention there will also be a Window display contest?  You can vote for your favorite at www.mainstreetannarbor.org.

I’ll be checking out this sale later this week so stay tuned for updates on that, photos of the window displays, and more tips for shopping in Ann Arbor for this Holiday Season.
