The Art of Dressing Yourself

For all those who take an interest in fashion, care about trendiness, or simply enjoy looking hip, there is one question that always looms in the back of our minds: “Is this still in?”

We can’t help it—we’re simply paralyzed by the fear of having last year’s hairstyle or clothing. We read magazines, search the internet and scan the crowds for inspiration, all to find out what’s still “cool.”

At this point, it’s a habit. We don’t even realize we’re doing it. Part of this is due to the media; advertising is everywhere in the 21st century. How many times have you been watching your favorite TV show and thought to yourself, “wow, I wonder where that outfit came from…” or “I want to get my hair cut like that!”

As any trendsetter will tell you, it’s not about the newest “it” accessory or having the hottest hairstyle. It’s not about labels, the price tags, or looking like Serena Van der Woodsen. Real fashion is about self-expression and establishing your own identity. Those who dress fearlessly—without  a thought to what others might think—are the true trendsetters, the ones who cause heads to turn while walking down the street.

So next time you find yourself in your room surrounded by piles of clothes frantically screaming, “I have nothing to wear,” remember this simple rule: always dress yourself.
