Featherstone and the City: An A-Line Interview with FIT Student
Meet Melissa Featherstone, a sophomore at the Fashion Institute of Technology, who currently resides in downtown Manhattan. Melissa studies and explores both fashion design and styling, in what she swears to be the most inspiring surroundings any artist could ask for. She recently started working with the up and coming New York based fashion designer, Kate Cummings. Melissa is doing her best to make any mark she can in this competitive industry.
Who in your life would you credit for your love of fashion?
My love for fashion should be credited to a “what” rather than a “who.” My transition from a ten year old aspiring to be a veterinarian to an eighteen year old fashion design major was fueled solely by my love for Manhattan. My mom and I used to take the forty-five minute trip into the city on more Sundays than either of us can now count. We would visit art galleries, boutiques, thrift stores, photography exhibits. The visual stimulation there is like nowhere else. And while that might all sound very cliche, there is nothing predictable about how this city can move you.
Which talent (non fashion related) would you most like to have as your own?
I’ve always wished I could sing! Even listening to myself sing at home is painful.
Life motto?
“… exhaust yourself in the glorious pursuit of life.” – Lawrence K. Fish
What trend are you getting tired of seeing? And what trend will never get old?
Animal print! I’ve seen several blogs and magazines swear it to be the “new neutral,” but I wouldn’t mind going a few years without any zebra or leopard print in my life. What will never get old is skinny jeans, high top Converse sneakers, a good leather jacket, sunglasses that fit your face, and a flashy cocktail ring.
What recently purchased article of clothing stands out in your mind?
A cream colored, high-waisted tutu for New Year’s Eve! It might sound a bit over the top, but I promise it was a winner. Paired with a vintage gold elastic belt, black leotard, opaque tights, and some antique-inspired jewelry. All purchased the day of, of course. Nothing like an afternoon in New York frantically speed shopping.
Favorite store?
Store?! How about stores! Purdy Girl, LF, Free People, Blush, Pinkyotto, BCBG Max Azria, and the list goes on and on…
One thing you can’t leave the house without?
My prescription sunglasses. I’ve lost my battle with contact lenses and would always rather throw on my sunglasses than spend time in front of the mirror applying eye makeup.
Favorite fashion accessory?
Right now, a great fur (or faux) vest and the Sam Edelman Zoe boot.
A-Line wishes Melissa the best of luck with her endeavors in the Big City. We’re so excited to see what marks she’s sure to make in the fashion industry.
