Marc Sebastian Faiella: Made In the Shade of Grey

Meet Marc Sebastian Faiella (how amazing is that name?!). He’s funny, handsome, sarcastic, and currently studying abroad in Florence, Italy. He’s also a talented student at FIT, who has designed some amazing articles of clothing. Oh, and he loves awkward moments, long walks on the beach, and candlelit dinners (note: below images courtesy of Mr. Faiella).

Who in your life would you credit for your love of fashion?

I would have to credit my mother. She has been so supportive in everything I do. I love it when she comments on my creations. She honestly is the funniest woman I know, which is why I love hearing her input so much.

Who is your favorite fashion designer?

I love Peter Som, Jack and Lazaro from Proenza Schouler, Riccardo Tisci, and Paul Poiret.

Least favorite fashion designer?

That’s a no brainer. Lindsay Lohan for Emanuel Ungaro.

Which talent would you most like to have as your own?

I think either to be able to act or sing. It seems like a whole lot of fun to be able to belt out a perfect harmonic song (not like it stops me now anyway). I mean, I’m convinced that, after singing “Bad Romance” so many times, I’m just as good as Lady Gaga.

Life motto?

“If you want it bad enough, you’ll find a way to get it.”

You have such amazing designs. Where do you find the inspiration?

I love this question. What inspires me most are the stories I make up in my head that are inspired by things I see. I’ll explain. When I look at an image or a video, I try to make up a story of a girl who would be in that point of time. What would she wear? How would she feel? I try to bring all of that into the art of clothing. I think that’s why I love images of interiors. I get to make up my very own story about the girl who lives there. And, trust me, it works!

What color is hot right now?

Grey. It’s always grey. I don’t care if it’s ninety-seven degrees and you are dying like Rachel Zoe in a fur shop. Wear grey! It’s the new purple, which was the new black.

What trends are you getting tired of seeing?

UGGS, Balmain, and leggings.

What trends will never get old?

Socks with heels, rolled up pant hems, and leather backpacks.

Most fashionable person you know?

I’m not sure! I get a lot of ideas from my friends, so I’d say they are the most fashionable people I know. Emilie Laperriere and David Siwicki, two of my closest friends, are always inspiring me. I really love bringing menswear elements into womenswear and Emilie really knows how to pull it off. David knows a good look when he sees one. My other friend, Bardia Zeinali, always brings it and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve just been in awe of his look. If we’re talking celebrities, I really love Tilda Swinton. She looks good in whatever is placed on her lean, gorgeous body!

Least fashionable person you know?

Ha! This isn’t a nice question! I’d have to say that everyone has their own style…

Other than fashion, what other hobbies do you have?

I love to explore and I love to edit film with my new Flipcam. You know, the casual Facebook stalking, people watching. I tend to get lost a lot. Oh, and runway walking. Wait, did I just say that? Okay, I may runway walk when I’m alone (or in public), but I’m not that great at it. Alright, who am I kidding? I could give Karlie Kloss a run for her money.

What artists are you listening to right now?

Tilly and the Wall, Tegan and Sara (literally always), and The Sounds.

If you were given $1,000, where would you spend it?

First off,  I would not tell my mom because she’s always telling me to save money. But, I would grab the pair of yellow Clark’s that I have been eyeing in the store next to my apartment. I’d most likely end up saving the rest because I would feel guilty that my mom would find out.

The last article of clothing that you purchased?

A blazer from Milan. Okay, fine, you caught me- it’s from Zara, but I got it in Milan, which entitles me to say I got it there! Don’t judge me.

Favorite store?

I honestly do not have a favorite store! I shop all over. I remember when I used to answer this question back in 8th grade on MySpace surveys (ugh) and I felt so cool being like *~Abercrombie~*. Now, especially living in New York, I tend to enjoy going to flea markets and just picking up random things.

Describe your own sense of style.

I tend to like looking put together with something slightly off. I love to layer so its common for me to have four shirts on or two watches on one wrist (it’s true!). I like combining old with new. I wear a lot of grey and I always wear dark blue denim and Converse, but recently I have been curious about khaki. I’m too nervous though! It’s funny, I always say I can’t really dress myself, but I can dress others!

Favorite decade in terms of style?

I’m such a sucker for the 1920′s and I don’t care how cliche it sounds. Give me a straight bodice and embroideries galore and I’ll be set!

Favorite fashion accessory?

I love shoes. I think I’d like to design shoes someday because there is really something about breaking out of old molds and filling new ones. I want to try to recreate the shoe. Note: I’m extremely ambitious!

One thing you cannot leave your apartment without?

My sketchbook, eyeglass case of pens, Bl(Cr)ackberry, wallet, and keys!

Check out some of Marc Sebastian Faiella’s pieces below. And, remember the name- I’m pretty sure he’ll be making it big one day.
