Tips for a Fantastic 4th of July, SHEI style

Last year, we took the weekend off for America’s birthday. This year…not so much. for tips on how to pass the time between the obligatory parade in the morning and patriotic pyrotechnics this evening, keep reading.

Tip #1: Check out the Google homepage. In honor of the 4th (and perhaps an indication of their love of OK Go), it features a Rube Goldberg Device of sorts, complete with (American) football, eagles, Lady Liberty, and fireworks.

Tip #2: Compare your 4th of July style to that of the first ladies – from Eleanor Roosevelt to Michelle Obama – with this article from Huffington Post. Are you a Jackie or a Hillary?

Tip #3: Watch a patriotic film. I suggest Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) starring James Cagney. Here’s a clip to get you started:

Tip #4: Get enthusiastic about the holiday. My favorite domestic diva, Martha Stewart, has tips.

Tip #5: See if you agree with these choices as the “Top 12 Most Patriotic Songs Ever” from CBS.

Tip #6: Since it’s the weekend, you probably get free minutes with your wireless plan. Take advantage of it to call some friends, especially the ones you haven’t seen since classes let out in April. You probably have lots to catch up on!

Tip #7: As we said last year, take this extra time to catch up on what you’ve missed in the SHEI Archive. Yes, you’ve been busy, but today and tomorrow (when you’ve probably got the day off) would be a great time to read up on the latest in design, pop-culture, and fashion. Leave us some comments too!

Some SHEI-mless Self-Promotion

A couple of months ago, University of Michigan B-School student, Christopher Anderson, was kind enough to use SHEI as the subject of a video made for a class project. More recently, SHEI sat down with the creator to hear his thoughts on getting a behind-the-scenes look at part of our creative process with our (then) Editor-in-Chief, Fashion Editor, and a SHEI model.

SHEI: What inspired you to choose the SHEI Fashion department for the subject of your project? What had been your experience with the magazine previously?

Anderson: The video case study featuring SHEImagazine was prompted from Ross Business School’s MO 315 class, Managing Human Capital. My group and I wanted to explore the HR practices of a more “out of the box” organization-one that focused heavily or creativity, communication and collaboration rather than a traditional firm.

I am good friends with Fashion Editor Will Defebaugh. Both my friendship with him and my one “SHEIfest” attendance inspired me to look further into the magazine.

SHEI: You had a unique look at 3 different aspects of SHEI – Editorial, Fashion, and the models – did anything surprise you about how those groups work together?

Anderson: SHEI’s unique collaboration and team effort practices revealed themselves as the biggest surprise. Although the pallet of talent was diverse, it was clear that everyone adhered to the same organizational values. Two things were clear. The first is that everyone is to be treated with integrity. The second was that clear and frequent communication is a necessary practice to achieve the creative synergy which makes up the magazine. Everyone feels at home and excited to be a part of the process.

SHEI: Could you go into a bit more detail about the filming process? Was it tricky to capture the magic of print…on film?

Anderson: When transferring and exploring one creative medium with another, it was a priority for us to capture the “essence” or “feel” of SHEI. However, we only had about 9 days to create this film. We knew what information we wanted to communicate from the interviews, but cinematographic choices had to be made for the final product. We employed a specific editing style while in post production to achieve an edgy, fast-paced feel. We also featured various pictures and footage of the magazine and meetings.

SHEI: We have to ask – how was the reception of the video?

Anderson: They loved it. It was clear that we took the most “artistic style” of others in the management class. The high marks were nice, but my group walked away with a sense of achievement on a job well done, all constraints considered. People are now that much more interested in SHEImagazine.

Our fashion team made an amazing backdrop video which was intended to be projected behind the models during the SHEIfest-X runway show. Tragically, some technological issues (i.e. a computer essentially melting) prevented us from showing it then. However, we’ve posted it on Vimeo so you can check it out it it’s full glory. From the Editor’s Desk: Our latest Issue

Dear Readers,

If you’re a daily visitor to our site, you may have noticed a number of changes: a newer, cleaner layout, some minor cosmetic changes, and (most excitingly!) the latest-and-greatest issue of SHEI magazine, free and available to all, on our website!

Issue 19 of SHEI is near and dear to my heart, and I’d like to thank everyone who made it happen, and for the blood, sweat and tears sacrificed to make it work. Our staff and contributors did an extraordinary job dreaming up articles and photoshoots, writing, shooting, modeling and editing, and putting together the final product that is SHEI. Their work paid off: cover-to-cover, this issue is amazing, and I’m extremely proud of it.

It was a rough task, to pick from the best of the best. Nevertheless, I’d like to share with you some of my personal favorites from issue:

Congratulations Graduates!

Congratulations to the University of Michigan Class of 2010! You’ve made it through 4 (or 5) years of papers written during the wee hours of the morning in the Fishbowl, singing countless rounds of The Victors, and wrestling with CTools. Pounds of coursepacks were read as you drank tons of coffee in preparation for what may have seemed an endless stream of papers and exams. But you did it well, and you did it with style. Your efforts were rewarded by a graduation speech delivered by President Barack Obama, making you the most envied class in recent Michigan history. SHEI offers you our warmest wishes and the best of luck in the future on which you now embark.

And we would also like to take this time to specially thank those members of SHEI who are leaving us and the University of Michigan for the bright new world which awaits them. Their contributions have, like those made by the members before them, shaped this magazine in amazing ways. Their drive and attention has transformed SHEI and allow us to continue to thrive.

Oscars 2010 – The SHEI Live Blog

The Academy Awards, i.e. the Oscars, are the biggest awards for achievement in motion picture making in the United States and for the media to croon over everybody's dresses.

The Oscars are tonight, if you haven’t heard , and we’re live-blogging it here at SHEI (or, at least, I am). If you’re hanging around Central Campus and are near South Quad, feel free to join a flock of people downstairs in the Basement and snark with us in person, OR click the link below to open up the window at EIGHT O’CLOCK (8PM) to join in on the conversation live online; we’ll be discussing everybody’s attire, predictions, the winners, the losers, how long it takes for the orchestra to play somebody off the stage, and more.
