The Music Box: Classical Music Is Cool

Bridget Cook

I have been playing the violin since I was 5 years old (see above). While I understand that most classical music is hard to swallow, there are some pieces that everyone should hear. Today's playlist may not come from a professional critic, but these are my personal favorites. I suggest listening as you study. After all, some good Bach-ground noise never hurt anyone.

This style of music is often prescribed the genre "classical." However, the word Classical actually refers to the time period in which much of this music was composed (other periods include Baroque, Renaissance, Romantic, and Modern). We apply the term "classical" broadly to all music performed by a band or orchestra, because it is all seen as old and about similar in style. Truthfully, there's no term for this genre, so I'm not suggesting any change in lifestyle. Just something to think about as you drift off listening.
