5 Shoe Trends You Need to Spring Into Summer

Lauren Henson

While winter is a time to bundle up and sip hot cocoa, those sunny afternoons mean spring is quickly approaching! It's time to shed those fuzzy socks, and show off your new pedicure. When the temperatures rise, toss your chunky boots back into the winter bin, show off a little skin, and let your toes breathe in this season's best new footwear trends. These sweet sandals and modish slip-ons are the 5 wardrobe staples you need for this spring and summer.

#1: Lace-Ups

The lace-up craze has recently taken the runway, and hopefully your closet by storm. Sandals laced all the way up to your knees are a fun rendition of the extended gladiators, and are coming in extra hot. Whether or not you choose to lace all the way up, even a simple wrap around the ankle shows an extremely cool detail to the shoe to show off your trendier side. Not only does the lace-up aspect look sexier, but it can also make your footwear better function. The strong ties keep the shoe in place for all your spring strolling and summer skipping by anchoring the sole to your foot. Another incredible feature is their versatility, making them a statement piece, or as fashionable everyday wear. A personal favorite is the Dahlia Lace-up Sandal by Free People. With five color options and a medium lace height, it's perfect to pair with a fun romper, or to throw on with a pair of casual jean cut-offs in the warm weather. Another cute sandal option is the Calvary Lace-Up from Chinese Laundry. With a slight heel and suede fabric, this lace-up can be worn for nicer occasions, without killing your feet, not to mention the cute color adds a fun pop.

#2: Mules

Another huge trend to look out for this summer is the illustrious “Mule”… but with a twist. This classic French shoe is usually backless, like a clog, with a closed toe and many variations in heel height. Back in the 80’s and 90’s, Mules were everywhere! But like most good things, they came to an end when everyone and their mother discovered their comfort and hip quality. Since then, the Mule has resurfaced with the rise of bohemian style trends, and now are getting completely amped up. Some modern styles have channeled the shoe's funky vibes to expose some of the toes, like a typical sandal but with a much different silhouette.

My absolute favorite look is the Jeffrey Campbell "Lea Mule", with its marble pattern and red insole, it's sure to get a double-take. The shoe is beautifully made, and the peep-toe adds fresh flare. More and more designers are coming out with peep-toed options (called “slides” or “slippers”), so we can be sure that, chunky heel or not, they're set to become a big summer hit once again!

#3: Pointed-Toe

Another huge trend of the summer is the ever-classic pointed toe. While we all know and love this look, it’s getting a major update with different textures, cutouts, and colors. This trend radiates professionalism, and is always chic. The pointed-toe looks great with business wear, whether you're wearing slacks or a pencil skirt, they're a sure fire way to add your own style to the usual boring business uniform.

Christian Louboutin took the pointed-toe look to a whole new level, designing a complete footwear line in “nude” colors, with one to match nearly every skin-tone (except for that bright red sole, of course!) Pointed-toes automatically make any outfit look put together and on point.

#4: Fringe

Another huge trend of the season is free-spirit fringe. While fringe may have blown up first in 2015, this Western-inspired trend hasn’t lost momentum on the runway or in our hearts. Designers everywhere are adding details of all kinds, from fringe tassels to fully-lined ankle fringe in both suede and leather.

Steve Madden jumped on the fringe band-wagon with incredibly bright yet fun heels that would look amazing with an LBD, or any dark color for a powerful pop. On heel, sandal, or boot, they add a fun and flirty element to your feet that will have you dancing all night long.

#5: Espadrilles

Want to update your casual summer outfit? Add espadrilles to the mix! With so many colors, patterns, and styles, it’s no wonder they can work with anyone’s style or look. The upper's light and breathable woven material makes espadrilles ideal for all warm-weather occasions, not to mention they’re incredibly comfortable! The unique texture of the Spanish-influenced shoe can be added to dress up or down any outfit you have planned for summer.

Chanel makes a beautifully detailed, flat espadrille with all different kinds of textures. Each of them has the classic espadrille sole, but some are made with canvas, while others are made with jean and leather. The leather twist adds a fun grunge vibe to this usually comfy summer shoe without feeling bulky.  Each shoe also includes the classic symbol placed at the top for an ultra-cool look. Pick espadrilles for a classic summer staple.
