Netflix: Beat the Winter Blues

Madeline Moog

As winter begins to hit full-swing with chilly winds and increased snowfall, outdoor activities and even the desire to leave the house may be buried in the three feet of snow outside your doorstep. For the average college student, a well-deserved break from the demands of academics is usually attached to the emergence of an unapologetic couch potato.  Even the most fearless New Year's resolutioner may resort to a cozy day at home to avoid the icy trip to the gym.  No matter how much you motivation you possess to get out and do something, sometimes the chilly weather will drag you back to your couch. However, there is a well-known cure for those days of wintry boredom: Netflix. So curl up with a cup of hot cocoa, grab your Snuggie, and prepare to enter the realm of corny sitcoms and throwback classics. Here are the top things to watch on Netflix this winter season.

First, let’s start with TV series:

How I Met Your Mother

This charming and funny sitcom will have you hooked in no time. The characters are so relatable (almost like the new ‘Friends’ of our generation) and main character Ted’s search for his wife will keep you guessing throughout the whole series. And another plus: there are eight seasons—enough  brain candy for several Netflix-binge nights.

Orange Is the New Black

If you have not had a chance to discover this one season series by now, you are truly missing out. The story of ex-accomplice Piper Chapman begins with her admittance to federal prison. From there, she is met with interesting challenges and the brisk reality of her past. This show is just too good to pass up.

American Horror Story

For those who enjoy a thrill, this series has to be the best. Not only will this show keep you on your toes with suspense, but the storyline is so well-written that a relationship with all of the characters is sure to form.

The Office

Ah, one of my personal faves. If you’re looking for a less-conventional comedy with a large set of quirky, yet relatable characters, The Office is your show. Dry humor reaches a whole new level  with stars like Steve Carell, John Krasinski, and Rainn Wilson. And with all nine seasons on Netflix, you are sure to be hooked in the web of relationships and unique situations that occur in the Dunder-Mifflin Paper Office.

Now let’s take a look at some must-watch films:

Shakespeare In Love

This romantic drama will warm you up on any chilly day this winter. Everyone knows the classic story of Romeo and Juliet. But do you also know the story of how this tale was first written and produced? Watch this unique take on the life of the brilliant writer that is Shakespeare.

Pulp Fiction

For anyone looking for something a little more “unique,” you can’t go wrong with anything from Quentin Tarantino. But be warned, this film not your common Hollywood blockbuster. For days when you are looking for a pick-me-up that makes you think, Pulp Fiction is the way to go. This movie is a true masterpiece.

Clueless

Need I say more? The epitome of classic chic-flicks; perfect for a day where you want a laugh and maybe indulge in a little bit of nostalgia.

Into The Wild

Based off the mega-popular book by Jon Krakauer, this story details the life of Christopher McCandless—a college grad who decides to leave his conventional life of money and security for the transcendental-inspired career of a recluse alone in the wild. A truly riveting film, fascinating and thought-provoking for a dreary winter day.
