CathyRecommends: 2013 Beauty Favorites

Lauren Guldan

Even though we are already a month into 2014, it is still not too late to reflect on products that were worth the hype in 2013. Listed below are the five beauty products that you should add into your beauty kit in 2014. 1) Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer

Disappointingly, my quest to find the perfect foundation did not end in 2013. I liked a lot of foundations but there was not one in particular that I wanted to label as my  all time favorite foundation, nor did I find one that can work for everyone. However, unexpectedly on my search for the perfect foundation I inadvertently found my "holy grail" concealer. Make Up For Ever Full Cover fits the bill for the ideal concealer; it does not crease, smudge, or transfer. Furthermore it is waterproof. It comes in 12 colors, in Sephora, and ranges from porcelain to ebony shades. The only con of this product is its price. Thirty-two dollars is definitely hefty for .5 fl. oz. of product. However, a little goes a long way with this concealer and one tube can easily last you over half a year. I can confidently say that I have used this concealer consistently throughout 2013 and am ready to give it my stamp of approval.

2) Benefit Hoola Bronzer

Benefit Hoola bronzer is a very matte, gray-based, natural looking bronzer making it the perfect contouring product. For those of you who are not into contouring that statement probably sounded strange and this product probably is not for you, but for those of you who go hard on the paint with your bronzers, this is a must. It is pigmented and lasts forever and is well worth its $28 price. (For those of you with a deeper skintone I highly recommend NARS Casino or Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder).

3) NARS Orgasm Blush

This award winning blush definitely deserves the hype it has received in 2013. I have already recommended this product to many of my friends and even my mother and aunts.  Judging from the feedback it really seems to be a universal blusher. The color is very flattering and natural, and despite the shimmer and glitter in the pan, it transfers as a natural sheen on the cheeks. It also looks beautiful with bronzers and highlighters due to its natural color and finish. If you find that this color is too light or too dark for your skintone, NARS offers a magnificent range of blushers that will guarantee you find your perfect shade. Definitely worth the price and definitely worth the hype.

4) L'oreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara (waterproof)

To your relief, and your bank account's, the next two products are drugstore products. If I were to write this post a few months ago, I would have suggested Lancome's Hypnose waterproof mascara in a heartbeat. I have been using Lancome's Hypnose waterproof mascara since I was in middle school and was absolutely devastated when I ran out of my last back up tube last semester. Feeling lazy and cheap, I went to CVS with a friend and she suggested this mascara. I was extremely speculative but my opinion changed immediately after my first application. It gives just as much length and volume as the Lancome mascara, which is 28 dollars, and is even more pigmented. The only con is that it is more prone to clumping after three coats. However, for those of us who have little to no lashes, spider lashes is never really an issue.

5) Milani Eye Tech Extreme Liquid Eyeliner

Milani has quite a few variations of this product, however, the Eye Tech Extreme Liquid Liner blows all of its counterparts out of the water. The brush is thin and durable making the application clean and precise. The consistency of the liquid is black and waterproof. I highly suggest you pick it up at your local CVS or Walgreens and try it out as soon as possible. Just remember since it is a pen and some pens are a little drier than others. If you find you do not like your first pen, give it one or two chances, it may be just a bad batch.
