Though no longer angry, the birds have struck again in the latest app game craze: Flappy Bird. If you haven’t already been taken under its wing, it’s only a matter of time. We have come a long way since Temple Run, with games like Angry Birds, Candy Crush Saga and Fun Run each becoming a phenomenon at one point in time. Though the concept of these free games has become slightly more difficult over the years, it’s curious why a game as simple as Flappy Bird has managed to gain so much popularity in the past week.
OBJECT OF THE GAME: Get the flappy bird passed the openings in green pipe-like structures by tapping the screen. That’s it. Seems easy enough, right?
Not being much of a gamer, I was a bit hesitant to hit the “download” button on my phone, but I went for it anyway. I had to see what all the noise was about. As it turns out, the frustration I experienced (as most do with this game) while trying to get passed even just the first pipe only increased my desire to keep playing. That’s how they get you. While seemingly juvenile in nature, it is one of the hardest app games you’ll encounter. You might even find yourself laughing at your own inability to master Flappy Bird, which is the reaction creator Dong Nguyen hoped for.
It has now been two days since I’ve downloaded the app and I am proud to say I reached a personal high of 17 points.
